Where to stay in Passau — the neighbourhoods
A quick, honest look at Passau's central areas and how far our Old-Town apartment is from the sights, the river and the cruise pier.
Passau is small and built for walking, so almost anywhere central works — but the Altstadt (Old Town) is the sweet spot, and that’s exactly where our apartment is.
Altstadt (Old Town)
The historic heart, on the spit of land between the Danube and the Inn: cobbled lanes, the Stephansdom with its huge organ, cafés, and the river promenade all within a few minutes’ walk. It’s the easiest base if it’s your first time in Passau — and being a quiet top-floor flat, it stays pleasantly cool in summer.
Getting your bearings
- Stephansdom & main square — 2 minutes on foot
- Danube promenade — about 3 minutes
- Cruise pier — roughly 8 minutes, handy if you’re joining or leaving a river cruise
- Veste Oberhaus (the hilltop fortress, great views) — about 20 minutes up
- Main station (Hauptbahnhof) — around 12 minutes on foot
A few common questions
Do I need a car? No. The Old Town, station and riverfront are all within a 15-minute walk.
Is it quiet at night? Yes — it’s a top-floor flat off the busiest lanes: central, but not above the noise.
When’s the best time to come? Spring to early autumn for the river and terraces; December for the Christmas market around the cathedral. Summer weekends and market dates book up first.
