Eating and drinking in Passau
How to eat well in Passau — the areas to aim for, what's typical, and how to get our current favourites.
Passau punches above its size for food — a mix of traditional Bavarian taverns, riverside terraces, Italian places (the Inn flows down from the south, and it shows), and a lively, good-value student scene thanks to the university.
Where to head
- The Old-Town lanes — between the Rathausplatz and the cathedral you’ll find classic Bavarian Wirtshäuser (think roast pork, dumplings, local beer) and cosy cafés. Best for a proper sit-down dinner a few minutes from the apartments.
- Along the rivers — terraces on the Danube side are the spot for a slow lunch or an evening drink with the water in front of you.
- Towards the university (Innstadt side) — younger, cheaper, busier in term time; good for casual eats, coffee and late drinks.
Practical tips
- Kitchens in smaller taverns can stop early — aim to order by 8–8:30pm to be safe.
- Many places take cards now, but it’s still worth carrying a little cash.
- Weekend evenings and cruise days fill the central terraces fast; book ahead or go a touch earlier.
We keep a short list of current favourites — including where to go for breakfast, a quick lunch between sights, and a proper dinner — and we’re happy to share it when you book or arrive. Tell us what you’re after and we’ll point you to the right table.
